Storage As A Service

Storage As A Service

Storage As A Service- Data can be likened to blood cells that contain important and crucial business information for all elements of the company. Incorrect, damaged, or even lost data can result in losses for the company, sometimes with fatal consequences. Therefore, within IT infrastructure, the storage system is an appliance that must not fail and must be reliable in safeguarding data.

Choosing the Right Storage Service for Your Business

As technology and business mobility develop, data also flows, not only within the internal environment of the company, but also into the public domain. The increasing mobility of data requires increasingly sophisticated IT infrastructure, which is, of course, increasingly expensive. Ultimately, it only becomes a commodity for companies with sufficient funds.

The development of IT towards cloud computing has also led to a shift in data storage methods towards the cloud. Whereas in the past it was necessary to build your own Data Center, which was expensive and complicated to manage, now you can simply subscribe to a cloud provider and use their storage services. This model of hosting data in the cloud is more commonly known globally as Storage-as-a-Service or STaaS, which utilizes developments in storage clustering and virtualization technology.

The way STaaS works can be described as follows:

Storage As A Service

The platform is provided by a cloud provider, with the requirement that the storage owned by the cloud provider must have secure multi-tenancy features. Multi-tenancy in storage can be divided into several parts according to the number of tenants/users using it, and each user will be isolated from one another. Each user will have a public IP or local IP that serves as a gateway to access their storage, and encryption can be added to prevent unauthorized access.

This is very similar to how secure boxes provided by banks work. Each customer is given a key to their box and access to their box room, and they do not need to know who owns the box next to them. Security is also very tight. Upon entering, bank security will ask about the purpose of the visit. There are also CCTV cameras recording all activities, ensuring that not a single moment goes unmonitored. Upon entering the secure box area, a guard will ask which box number belongs to the customer, preventing them from entering the wrong box or room. The key for each box must be unique and difficult to replicate.

A good security layer in the Storage as a Service platform is essential to maintain user data security. In general, this layer consists of two major parts: Public and User-defined security. The public security layer usually consists of a firewall, antivirus, and anti-DDOS attack. All of these serve to protect data security against common public attacks. On the end-user side, storage must also have its own security measures that are fully controlled by the user, such as firewalls and access keys. This is intended to prevent unwanted access from within the platform.

Advantages of Storage as a Service (STaaS)

1. IT cost efficiency – with the OPEX model, capital can be minimized.

2. Flexibility – increasing capacity and performance requirements are no longer a headache; they can be added whenever needed.

3. Risk transfer – infrastructure risks that have been a concern for management can be transferred to the provider so that IT managers can sleep soundly.

4. Ease of access – with a cloud concept that connects directly to the internet, data can be accessed wherever you are.

5. Secure – this may be a paradox, but your data in a data center may not be as secure as data in the cloud, because data in the cloud already has globally recognized security standards (not all cloud providers have them).

Businesses will face serious challenges from global competition. It is no longer the time to focus primarily on IT infrastructure…what needs to be done is to prepare, but don’t make the wrong preparations.
