In today’s digital era, data storage has become a critical part of business operations. Many companies handle large amounts of data and need secure and scalable solutions. Therefore, cloud computing has emerged as a reliable technology to store and manage data efficiently. As technology evolves, the comparison of private cloud vs public cloud becomes increasingly important for businesses.

Although both models offer cloud-based storage, they serve different needs. For this reason, understanding the differences helps organizations choose the right solution. In this article, we explain private cloud and public cloud along with their key benefits.

What Is Private Cloud?

A private cloud is a cloud computing model designed for a single organization.

This model follows a single-tenant approach, which means resources are not shared with other users. As a result, businesses gain higher control and stronger data security.

In addition, private cloud offers scalability and efficient resource usage similar to public cloud services. However, it provides dedicated infrastructure, which increases privacy and allows customization.

Because access is limited to one organization, companies can manage data more effectively. Therefore, private cloud is ideal for businesses that prioritize security and control.

What Is Public Cloud?

A public cloud is the most widely used cloud computing model. It delivers IT services through the internet using shared infrastructure managed by a third-party provider.

In this model, providers own and operate servers, storage, and networking systems. As a result, businesses do not need to manage physical infrastructure.

In addition, public cloud offers high scalability and flexibility. Companies can quickly adjust resources based on demand. Therefore, this model is suitable for businesses that need cost efficiency and fast deployment.

Benefits of Private Cloud vs Public Cloud

Choosing the right Hospital Management Software (HMS) can feel challenging. Many hospitals now adopt cloud systems, while others still prefer on-premise setups. Because each option offers different strengths, hospitals must review them carefully before making a decision.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed hospital operations dramatically. Workloads increased, and hospitals shifted their focus toward patient care. As a result, they needed software that could simplify tasks and support medical staff more effectively. This is where HMS plays an essential role.

When you compare cloud and on-premise HMS, the decision becomes even more complex. Therefore, understanding the strengths and limits of both systems helps you choose the most effective solution for your hospital.

What Is HMS?

HMS improves administrative and operational tasks inside a hospital. It handles finance, accounting, patient records, and doctor schedules. Moreover, it helps hospitals place patients in the correct wards, manage resources, and plan equipment purchases. With better data accuracy, hospitals can enhance patient care and optimize workflows.

Today, many hospitals rely on HMS because it allows them to operate more efficiently. Additionally, it helps them prepare for future challenges such as pandemics or other crises.

Types of HMS

Cloud-Based HMS

A cloud HMS stores data online, so users can access it from any location. Because installation is simple and the interface is intuitive, many hospitals choose this model. In addition, cloud HMS systems use secure data centers with strong protection, such as Cloudflare or AWS-grade security.

On-Premise HMS

In an on-premise system, hospitals keep all data on physical servers inside the facility. The internal IT team or an outsourced specialist manages the servers directly. Since the data stays on local machines, hospitals can still access it even when the internet goes down.

Common HMS Capabilities

Hospitals use HMS to:

Manage large patient and staff databases

Maintain strong data security

Provide flexible data access

Simplify workflows

Enable easy system updates

Offer a user-friendly interface

Reduce the workload of administrators

Support access to medical records

Manage inventory

These features allow hospitals to work more efficiently and make better decisions.

HMS Infrastructure Models

Cloud HMS works through the internet. Its databases and system components follow the provider’s specifications. Furthermore, cloud deployments come in several forms:

Public Cloud: Multiple customers share the same hardware.

Private Cloud: One dedicated customer uses a fully isolated server.

Hybrid Cloud: Combines both public and private cloud features for greater flexibility.

Meanwhile, on-premise HMS runs locally inside the hospital. Therefore, the IT team must manage and maintain the system every day.

Data Accessibility

Cloud HMS allows users to access data from anywhere and at any time. Because of this flexibility, it supports remote work and enables staff to retrieve information quickly. Moreover, the system does not depend on a physical server inside the hospital, which improves efficiency.

On-premise HMS only works within the hospital’s network. Consequently, users cannot access data outside the facility, which limits mobility.

Data Security and Protection

Healthcare data requires strict protection. Hospitals must handle patient information with care to avoid serious risks.

Cloud vendors provide strong security layers and continuous monitoring. Although some people assume cloud systems are less secure, many hospitals still trust cloud HMS because it receives constant updates and threat protection.

On-premise HMS gives hospitals full control of their data. However, the IT team must monitor the system 24/7 and manage all risks internally. This setup increases responsibility, but it also limits exposure to external threats.

Maintenance and Updates

Cloud-based HMS receives ongoing maintenance from the provider. As a result, updates happen automatically and reduce the technical workload on hospital staff.

On the other hand, on-premise HMS requires internal teams to handle every maintenance task. This approach demands more time, resources, and technical expertise.

Conclusion: Cloud HMS at a Glance

Cloud and on-premise HMS both offer strong benefits. The right choice depends on your hospital’s needs and technical capabilities.

Hospitals that want flexible access, easier maintenance, and lower operational effort usually choose cloud HMS. Meanwhile, hospitals with strong technical teams and a preference for full control often select on-premise systems.

Companies are already experiencing the public cloud benefits—greater efficiency, faster operations, and simpler processes. With cloud computing, business leaders can focus on what matters most: growing their business.

Every company has different needs, so organizations can choose between public, private, or hybrid cloud models. The right decision depends on the business type, budget, IT capabilities, and security requirements.

To make the best choice, it’s important to first understand public cloud. As the most widely used cloud computing model, public cloud delivers infrastructure, storage, servers, and platforms over the internet.

Cloud providers own and manage the physical hardware, then offer these resources to businesses based on their usage needs.

Popular public cloud providers include Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine, and IBM Cloud.

In a public cloud environment, multiple users share the same physical infrastructure. This setup spreads costs across users, and when combined with a pay-as-you-go model, makes public cloud an ideal solution for small and medium-sized businesses.

Below are the top public cloud benefits you should know.

1. Cost Efficiency with Public Cloud

10 Public Cloud Benefits for Modern Businesses

One of the strongest public cloud benefits is flexible pricing. Most providers allow hourly or usage-based payments.

As a result, businesses can control budgets more effectively. Companies can run web applications without worrying about server purchases, software licenses, setup, or maintenance costs.

2. Fast and Easy Setup

Public cloud environments can be set up in just a few hours. Services are purchased online and deployed remotely through the provider’s dashboard.

Therefore, IT teams can configure and manage systems easily. All they need is an internet connection.

3. Reduced Employee Costs

Hiring skilled IT professionals is expensive. In many cases, staffing costs become difficult to control.

With public cloud, companies only pay for cloud services. Since cloud management is simpler, small in-house IT teams are often sufficient. As a result, operational budgets become more efficient.

4. No Maintenance Required

Cloud providers handle hardware, software, and network maintenance. This includes updates and security management.

Because of this, companies can run infrastructure with fewer IT staff. Maintenance costs are also reduced significantly.

5. No Long-Term Contracts

Small and medium businesses often avoid long-term commitments. They may not know future storage or computing needs.

Public cloud solves this problem. Most providers offer pay-as-you-go models with no long-term contracts. This gives businesses financial flexibility.

6. Large-Scale Economy Advantages

Public cloud offers strong economies of scale. It is difficult for private data centers to match this efficiency.

Because infrastructure costs are shared across many users, providers optimize hardware usage. As a result, services are offered at lower prices.

7. Greater Business Agility

In today’s market, companies must move fast. They must innovate, adapt, and make quick decisions.

Public cloud simplifies internal operations. It improves collaboration, speeds up business initiatives, and enhances data collection and analysis. This agility becomes a competitive advantage.

8. Global Accessibility

Many businesses operate globally and need 24/7 service availability. Public cloud providers offer global server networks and high bandwidth capacity.

If sensitive data must stay within a specific country, companies can choose data centers in that region. This flexibility supports compliance and performance needs.

9. High Flexibility and Data Protection

Before cloud adoption, companies needed duplicate hardware and storage to prepare for failures. This increased cost and complexity.

With public cloud, data is automatically replicated across multiple data centers. Therefore, businesses no longer worry about backups or sudden infrastructure costs.

10. Maximum Uptime and Minimal Failure Risk

Most public cloud providers guarantee uptime above 99%. Because workloads are distributed across multiple servers, failures are handled automatically.

If one server goes down, another takes over instantly. This ensures stable performance and reliable application availability.

Trusted Public Cloud Services from Indonesian Cloud

Public cloud benefits make this technology a strong foundation for modern IT infrastructure. Today, companies need systems that are flexible, secure, and easy to scale. Because of that, public cloud has become a practical choice for many businesses.

In simple terms, public cloud is a cloud computing platform that allows users to access IT resources remotely. These resources include virtual machines, applications, and storage. Everything is delivered through the internet.

Moreover, public cloud uses flexible payment models. You can choose free tiers, subscriptions, or pay-as-you-go pricing. As a result, users only pay for CPU cycles, storage space, or bandwidth they actually use.

Understanding Public Cloud Services

Cloud computing plays an essential role in IT infrastructure. Public cloud platforms usually provide massive storage capacity and high availability. Therefore, they are widely used for software development and collaborative projects, such as web application development.

In general, cloud services fall into three main categories:

• Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Provides virtual servers, storage, and networking.

• Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Offers development platforms and tools without infrastructure management.

• Software as a Service (SaaS)

Delivers ready-to-use applications over the internet.

Each model serves different business needs. However, public cloud remains the most popular option because it is affordable, flexible, and easy to manage.

Why Public Cloud Is More Popular Than Private Cloud

Public cloud is often chosen over private cloud for a simple reason. It offers real, measurable advantages. These include lower costs, no long-term contracts, and zero infrastructure maintenance.

If you are still unsure, the following public cloud benefits explain why many companies rely on this model.

Public Cloud Benefits for Business Efficiency

Public Cloud Is Cost-Effective

One of the biggest public cloud benefits is cost efficiency. Companies no longer need to invest in hardware, data centers, or on-premise maintenance.

In many cases, online storage starts with free capacity. Additional storage comes with low monthly fees. Furthermore, public cloud centralizes operations and maintenance. These costs are shared across many users, which significantly reduces expenses.

Public Cloud Scalability Supports Growth

Public cloud ensures your infrastructure stays optimal at all times. Because resources are available on demand, systems can scale up during high traffic and scale down when demand drops.

As a result, businesses avoid overprovisioning hardware. This makes public cloud scalability a major advantage.

Public Cloud Does Not Require Physical Space

Public cloud services are delivered entirely through the internet. Therefore, users can access systems from anywhere in the world.

This flexibility supports remote work, global teams, and mobile development environments.

No Long-Term Commitment

Public cloud uses usage-based pricing. This model is ideal for small and medium-sized businesses that cannot predict future storage or bandwidth needs.

If demand increases, resources can be upgraded instantly. Because of that, public cloud becomes a safe and flexible option for growing companies.

Public Cloud Requires No Maintenance

Maintenance is fully handled by the cloud provider. This includes hardware, software, and network updates.

As a result, companies can run their infrastructure with minimal staff. At the same time, internal teams can focus on innovation and core business goals.

Public Cloud Improves Operational Speed

Public cloud simplifies daily operations. Instead of managing routine infrastructure tasks, companies can focus on value creation.

In addition, flexible IT infrastructure allows businesses to build stronger digital relationships with customers.

Fewer Operational Issues

Public cloud uses standardized services. The same systems are deployed repeatedly with consistent results.

Therefore, developers spend less time solving infrastructure problems. This leads to faster development cycles and higher productivity.

Public Cloud Benefits for Business Innovation

Easier Business Initiatives

With ready-to-use public cloud services, companies can launch new business models faster. As product value increases, revenue potential also grows.

Fast and Simple Setup

Public cloud environments can be set up within hours. Everything is deployed and configured remotely.

All you need is an internet connection. This speed makes public cloud a key enabler for DevOps success.

Public Cloud Benefits for DevOps Teams

Better Accessibility for Developers

Because public cloud has no physical boundaries, developers can build applications from anywhere. In addition, teams can collaborate anytime and anywhere. As a result, development flexibility improves significantly.

Stronger Security Standards

Most public cloud providers invest heavily in advanced security. They operate 24/7 security monitoring systems to protect client data.

Since many companies lack round-the-clock security teams, public cloud security becomes a reliable solution.

On-Demand Resources

Depending on the cloud model, such as PaaS, developers always have access to required tools and resources.

Therefore, teams do not waste time worrying about infrastructure availability.

Centralized DevOps Automation

Public cloud platforms support centralized automation for testing, deployment, and production. As a result, this approach helps DevOps teams work faster and more consistently.

Continuous Service Innovation

Public cloud providers constantly release new services. Examples include SSD storage, Big Data PaaS, and release automation tools.

Because of this innovation, development teams can build reliable and functional applications faster.

Trusted Public Cloud Solutions from Indonesian Cloud

With so many public cloud benefits, it is no surprise that public cloud plays a major role in modern DevOps and digital transformation.

Indonesian Cloud provides trusted public cloud solutions tailored to business needs.

In 2017, RightScale conducted a survey which showed that 79% of companies were using cloud services. Of those, 41% were using public cloud and 38% chose private cloud. Each year, the number of public cloud users continues to grow.

Public cloud services can offer significant value to companies that use them, and in many cases, public cloud providers can secure data better than companies that manage their own on-premises infrastructure.

However, if you are considering using a public cloud, it is important to understand the potential risks involved, as well as the steps that can be taken to mitigate those risks should issues arise.

Limited Control in Public Cloud

Public cloud limits user control. A public cloud environment is multi-tenant, meaning a single environment serves multiple customers. Because of this shared environment, public cloud customers are not given access to the hypervisor. This lack of access prevents customers from modifying the environment and results in limited control.

Public cloud providers own the hardware and software, allowing them to make changes—both minor and major—at their discretion without consulting customers. They also determine authentication, authorization, access control processes, and software configurations.

As a customer, your company has no control over these aspects or the associated procedures. If your company has strict security policies, it may be difficult to ensure those policies are fully enforced when using a public cloud.

Having Backup Copies

Some companies believe they are fully protected simply by storing files in the public cloud, even if they already have backups or a cyber disaster recovery plan. However, using a public cloud alone does not constitute disaster recovery, nor is it a sufficient backup method.

Many public cloud providers claim to have built redundancy into their infrastructure. Nevertheless, public cloud outages lasting several hours have still occurred.

Maintaining backups and a disaster recovery plan remains essential to ensure continued access to your data. This is especially important if your public cloud service becomes unavailable or if errors result in data loss.

In 2011, Amazon lost some customer data. In 2015, Google also experienced customer data loss. Incidents like these can happen and have affected even major companies.

Relying solely on public cloud storage is risky. Make sure your company has alternative backup methods and a disaster recovery plan to minimize potential impact.

Security in Public Cloud

As explained earlier, public cloud operates in a multi-tenant environment. This inherently introduces security threats, as a single vulnerability in the infrastructure can expose the entire environment.

Multi-tenancy exploitation could allow one tenant or a hacker to view other tenants’ data or potentially track their identities. Due to public cloud security vulnerabilities, companies must comply with existing regulations to minimize the negative impact of cloud usage.

Public cloud also limits your control, making it more difficult to enforce security policies once you are operating within a public cloud environment. These limitations include authorization, authentication, and access control, all of which increase your company’s security risks.

Data Ownership

Many people are unaware that public cloud providers may technically own customer data. The best practice is to carefully read the Service Level Agreement (SLA) and ensure that your company retains ownership of the data it stores.

Many cloud service providers, including large ones, include clauses in their contracts stating that customer data belongs to them. This protects them legally and may also allow them to generate additional revenue through data usage.

That said, cloud providers generally commit to maintaining data confidentiality. If your company uses public cloud services, several measures can help protect data, such as establishing strong SLA agreements, storing only non-confidential data in the public cloud, and choosing providers that allow you to retain data ownership.

Public Cloud Availability Risks

As widely known, no service can guarantee 100% uptime. In addition to common network failures and ISP downtime, there is also the risk of losing access to services when a cloud provider experiences outages.

Redundancy is no longer under the control of your internal IT team, meaning users must rely on the vendor to perform regular backups to prevent data loss. However, emergency plans are often unclear and may not explicitly define who is responsible in the event of service disruption or failure.

Companies planning to migrate data to public cloud or hybrid cloud environments must first ensure that the cloud provider offers disaster recovery solutions.

Smaller cloud vendors that lack sufficient data centers may rely on third-party providers with whom you have no direct contractual agreement. Therefore, contracts should clearly define accountability in the event of service disruption.

Conclusion

Despite these risks, it cannot be denied that public cloud offers numerous benefits for businesses. At Indonesian Cloud, you can choose from several public cloud providers such as Alibaba Cloud, Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud, Huawei Cloud, and AWS. You can consult with us to align the solution with your company’s needs.

Public cloud implementation often seems complex to many companies, especially those transitioning from traditional IT infrastructure. Based on direct research experience and discussions with multiple organizations, this study explores the key factors that influence public cloud adoption. These factors include perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, security, cost, reliability, agility, attitude toward usage, and actual system use.

This research also identifies six new managerial factors. Five factors—Adaptive, Performance, Economical, Flexible, and Speed—positively impact public cloud implementation. Meanwhile, Disruption negatively affects adoption. These findings provide practical guidance for decision-makers who plan a cloud computing strategy.

Managerial Implications of Public Cloud Implementation

Adaptive: Supporting Business Change

Adaptability refers to how easily a system adjusts to changing conditions. In today’s competitive market, companies must continuously innovate and adjust strategies. Therefore, they need information technology that can evolve quickly.

Public cloud services support business adaptability by enabling rapid changes in infrastructure and applications. As a result, companies can align IT capabilities with business strategy more effectively. This makes public cloud implementation a strong foundation for long-term growth.

Performance: Improving Productivity

Performance reflects how public cloud services improve organizational productivity. When companies choose a cloud provider with high availability, standardized security, and strong network infrastructure, system performance increases.

In addition, cloud platforms simplify system usage and isolate failures. Consequently, disruptions can be minimized and operational efficiency improves. This makes performance a critical factor in successful public cloud implementation.

Cost Efficiency: A Strategic Advantage

Cost efficiency is often the first question raised by IT managers. Common concerns include total cost, comparison with on-premises systems, and value compared to other providers. These concerns are valid and must be addressed clearly.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

According to Gartner, IT Total Cost of Ownership consists of capital costs, administration, technical support, and end-user operations. However, many companies only consider hardware and software purchase costs. This approach is incomplete.

A comprehensive TCO calculation should include:

Present value of investment, based on the company’s cost of capital

Training costs for internal teams

Operating costs, including upgrades and security

Maintenance and disaster recovery costs

In traditional IT environments, companies often overprovision servers. In reality, only 30–50% of capacity is used. Meanwhile, public cloud services allow companies to pay only for actual usage. As a result, public cloud implementation significantly reduces TCO.

Return on Investment (ROI)

ROI measures the financial benefit of technology adoption. In Indonesia, many organizations still rely on traditional IT models with large upfront investments.

Public cloud implementation enables companies to compare long-term cost savings between on-premises systems and cloud services. If cloud adoption delivers higher savings over time, it becomes a strong basis for strategic decisions.

CAPEX to OPEX Transformation

In IT finance, CAPEX refers to upfront hardware and software investment, while OPEX covers ongoing operational costs. Public cloud services shift IT spending from CAPEX to OPEX.

Instead of large initial investments, companies pay monthly based on usage. Therefore, budgets can be redirected to core business activities such as expansion or production growth. This financial flexibility strengthens the business case for public cloud implementation.

Flexibility: Easier System Integration

Public Cloud Implementation9

Flexibility enables seamless system integration across the organization. Most public cloud infrastructures are compatible with enterprise applications.

As a result, companies can run existing systems without purchasing additional hardware. This simplifies IT management and supports faster innovation.

Speed: Faster Deployment

Speed refers to how quickly systems can be implemented. While adaptability focuses on change, speed focuses on execution.

Public cloud implementation allows rapid deployment of applications and infrastructure. Consequently, companies can respond to business needs faster and more efficiently.

Disruption: Managing Risk in Cloud Adoption

Despite high Service Level Agreement (SLA) promises, disruption remains a risk. Many cloud providers offer availability guarantees above 99%. However, these claims must be evaluated carefully.

Before choosing a provider, companies should assess:

Infrastructure design and implementation

Hardware reliability

Expertise of the cloud operations team

Alignment between cloud solutions and business needs

Strength of the security architecture

By conducting thorough evaluations, companies can reduce disruption risks and ensure stable public cloud implementation.

Conclusion

Public cloud implementation offers strategic benefits when managed correctly. Factors such as adaptability, performance, cost efficiency, flexibility, and speed positively influence adoption. However, companies must address disruption risks by carefully selecting the right cloud provider.

With the right strategy, public cloud services can become a reliable foundation for business transformation.
